The Original Everest marathon & Khumbu challenge

OEM supports Unite for Nepal

One of the reasons for not cancelling the OEM months ago was concern for our trekking team in Nepal. They have already lost income from the spring season and now with the autumn cancelation they will have a year without income. This means families are going very hungry in villages like Ghunsa, where our support team is based.

We, and the wider OEM family, can do something to help.

There are approximately 80 households in need of food supplies and Unite for Nepal can reach them. A contribution of £14 could feed one family for three weeks.

On the weekend 24th -  26th July, you can run or walk one of three distances, each based on figures from the OEM:

  1. 42.2km / 26 miles
  2. 8.8 km / 5 miles
  3. 5.2 km / 3.5 miles

  1. The Original Everest Marathon is 42.2km. The OEM starts at Gorak Shep, the original base camp location on the Nepali side of Everest.

The OEM is listed by the Guinness Book of Records as the highest measured marathon on earth and it is very likely the toughest.

  1. Everest is nearly 9km high. Cover that distance on the horizontal and just imagine what it feels like to be so far above sea level at 8848m.

  1. Gorak Shep at 5,200m is the highest habitation in the wold. Runners trek for 15 days into the mountains, to get acclimatised and ready to run. The finish is at Namche Bazar, nearly 2km lower than the start line, but still seriously high altitude!
